Donald grew up in Paisley before attending Glasgow School of Art from 1980-85. After graduating he went on to postgraduate studies in theatre design at University College Cardiff (The Sherman Theatre).
Donald returned to Scotland in 1988 and has since designed shows for many Theatre companies in Scotland as well as working as a design assistant and scenic artist for The Citizens Theatre,Scottish Ballet and Scottish television.
In 2004 Donald moved from Glasgow to the,relative,peace of Skelmorlie in North Ayrshire. This has inspired a return to painting.
His work is, at present, focused on exploring the local landscape through texture,line and colour and although primarily working in acrylic he enjoys experimenting with various materials and techniques.
